OG Xbox 360 fans get disappointing news from Microsoft

Xbox 360 console fans from Microsoft for a long time may be disappointed with the new update from the company. When the Xbox 360 first launched in 2005, it came with an early version of the Xbox console that fans dubbed “Blades.” The Xbox 360 and later Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles have gone on to feature many different iterations of the dashboard, it’s this Blades setup that has continued to resonate with audiences more than a decade later. And while fans had hoped that Blades would one day return in a new form, unfortunately, those at Microsoft made it clear that it wouldn’t.

In a recent conversation about The official Xbox podcastMicrosoft’s Larry Hyrb (also known to Xbox fans as Major Nelson) responded to persistent requests to see the return of the Xbox 360 Blades format on Xbox Series X. While Hyrb appeared to praise what Blades had to offer at the time, he said that this visual style would not work. With the Xbox ecosystem nowadays.

“No, you can’t get the Blades back,” Hyrb said directly to fans when discussing future dashboard updates that are being worked on. “They were beautiful, they were kind, but you can’t take them back because they don’t fit, as we say in business, what we want to do.”

In short, this isn’t a huge shock and it’s hard to disagree with what Hyrb said. While Blades was great on Xbox 360, it also existed at a time when the digital ecosystem on Xbox wasn’t really getting started. With new and recent features like Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft Store, and a slew of social aspects now found on Xbox consoles, it’s hard to know how they work in the Blades chassis. While Blades was great at the time, it seems Xbox fans will just have to accept that this dashboard is officially a thing of the past.

Do you think the Xbox 360 Blades dashboard style can now work on current Xbox consoles? And what do you think of the current Xbox Dashboard that Microsoft is using right now? Make sure to let me know either in the comments or message me on Twitter at Trustworthy.
